My creative writing Res incerta features in the publication accompanying the project 'Ancestral Futures' curated by ViCCA Aalto University in the event Fog is a could that touches the ground at Vuosaaren Tilajakamo, Helsinki on 18 - 21 May 2023.
'Res incerta' imagines what would happen if a little dust, falling from the eye of a person I care for, would create a glitch in time so that our timeline would bend and continue in loops, starting again and again from “hello” yet always letting us meet. Some encounters are like ancestral connections making our souls move forward. From this glitch when time pauses, I started thinking about the "ifs" that lead the directions of our lives. More than visual, this little text is about sounds, collecting sonic memories from the past two years in Helsinki.
The exhibition Ancestral Futures looks at the ways different temporalities, and the different stories they hold, affect, constitute or suppress each other. How can non-linear time perspectives and non-hegemonic story-telling practices help us imagine and build more resilient and collective futures? In the here and now, what role do these practices play in reimagining possibility, hope and agency? How can we give them visibility? The project is organised by Erika Cárdenas Manzanilla, Lau Kaker, Jade Lönnqvist, Amy Merigo, Martina Šerešová, Mana Tashakoronia, and Rebekka Yallop.
Fog is a cloud that touches the ground is a transdisciplinary event that brings together five curatorial projects presenting work in response to the shared theme of crisis. The projects delve into concepts of legacy, feminist narratives, informational skepticism, numbness and the state of being overwhelmed as a reaction to adversity. With work varying from textile and performing arts to sound and video installation among other media, the event invites you to reflect on your own relationship with divergent forms and representations of crises. The event is comprised of five projects: We Didn’t Start the Fire, Numb, Ancestral Futures, The Heiress and The United States of Finlandica and is co-curated by Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) MA students participating in the Curating from Theory to Practice course.
